VA

You have to be in their system (you can register anytime but must have an honorable discharge) and must own their home


Either person, or the VA themselves, can get grant paperwork started. VFW also helps with building and cleanup if needed, as they love to help serve other veterans in need. Veterans can also talk to their primary care provider and ask for help. They can prescribe things they need such as walk in shower, grab bar, toilet seat riser, wheelchair ramp, etc. These things will come from their physical therapy or prosthetics dept. They can also have someone such as social worker, physical therapist, or home based primary care provider. You can request a home based primary care provider thru the VA - VA.gov

Usda Rural Development Section 504


Offers loans for home repair and improvement and offers grants to elderly, very low income homeowners to remove health and safety hazards. Application found on their website or in person at local USDA offices rd.usda.gov

HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development)


Offers title 1 and title 203k loans and grants to help repair and renovate homes for low income eligible residents in Illinois.

IHDA (Illinois Housing Development Authority)


Offers programs like the Home Repair and Accessibility Program (HRAP) and the Home Accessibility Program (HAP) Provides grants and forgivable loans for health and safety repairs, home modifications, and accessibility improvements for low income and disabled people. Eligibility varies by income, must be low income, must own your home, must be addressing health, safety, or accessibility issues. Find HRAP and HAP grantee organizations on IHDA website and get application from them. HAFHR (Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund) (also managed by IHDA) IHDA.org. Provides grants for critical home repairs to homeowners who experienced financial hardship due to Covid19.

IHWAP (Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program)


Offers funding for low income people to make their homes more energy efficient and can include health and safety upgrades.

Income must be at or below 200% of federal poverty level. Can include insulation, air sealing, and HVAC or water heater repair or replacement
